A few days before April 1st, select a large variety of riddle, knock knock, and joke books from the library. Have students spend time researching and reading jokes. Make a little joke or riddle book. Take joke breaks through out the day--each child reading their joke to the class (wear funny glasses or hat) while reading out each joke.
Try exchanging classes for a morning. Teachers of older students can tell the children they are being such goofy-heads they must go to a lower grade. The lower grade teacher tells her kids that they will go to 4th grade because they are so smart. The children will love it after the first shock.
Tape their first work sheet under the table for students to complete.
Try this joke: Bet a friend that you can put a stuffed animal on the floor and that he won't be able to jump over it. When he agrees, set the toy animal in a corner of the room, where it is impossible to jump over.
Tell a friend that you can be a mind reader. Tell them to write down the name of a famous person on a piece of paper and put it facedown on the floor. After it is on the floor, step onto the paper and tell your friend that you will soon state what's on the sheet. Pretend to concentrate for a moment and then say, "I've got it! It's my foot!"
A special treat for April Fool's Day - Dissolve a package of dessert gelatin according to the directions on the box (raspberry, strawberry or lemon to resemble fruit punch). Pour the liquid gelatin into drinking glasses, then place a plastic straw in each. Set the glasses on a tray in the refrigerator until the gelatin firms up. Tell the students you want to surprise them with a tasty drink! Sit back and enjoy.
